Derek Hagan arrived at Arizona State as a relatively unheralded recruit who the coaches thought might make a better defensive back than wideout. He’ll leave as the school’s best receiver since John Jefferson played for the Sun Devils in the mid-70s. From a statistical standpoint, Hagan should actually be better than Jefferson, as entering his senior year he is on pace to own the ASU record in every receiving category.
His approach to the game may be Hagan’s greatest asset. He never takes a down off and practices as hard as he plays in games. Hagan runs sharp routes and understands how to set up defenders and beat coverages. He has soft, reliable hands and a knack for slipping behind the defense and making big plays.
Hagan is solid in all areas but lacks the physical tools of an elite receiver prospect. He’s fast but not a burner, and is big enough but lacks the size and wingspan of many recent early draftees.
He doesn’t have the measurables of a Randy Moss or a Terrell Owens, but receivers like Marvin Harrison and Hines Ward have shown that those traits aren’t always necessary for NFL success. Hagan exemplifies the mindset that Dom Capers preaches to his players.
