The Michigan Wolverines need a receiver to fill the hole created when impact player Braylon Edwards moved on to the NFL, and they think Steve Breaston could be the guy. Breaston is a special talent, although he won’t live up to Edwards’ standard in the ego category; the easygoing Breaston lacks his former teammate’s thirst for the spotlight.
Breaston draws comparisons to former Wolverines Anthony Carter and Desmond Howard due to his ability to make defenders miss. A former high school quarterback who once rushed for over 200 yards in a state championship game, Breaston’s greatest impact so far in his college career has been as a kickoff and punt returner. He racked up a total of 221 yards on returns against Texas in the 2005 Rose Bowl.
Although Breaston only missed one game last year, a foot injury hindered him throughout the season. He is still learning the wide receiver position and lacks some of the fundamentals that top prospects usually possess.
Breaston is a gamebreaker who could pay immediate dividends at the NFL level as return man. If he shows this season that he can also be a consistent contributor on offense, he should boost his draft stock significantly.
