Confidence is not a problem for Braylon Edwards. The son of former Houston Oiler runningback Stan Edwards, Braylon requested jersey number “1” after his breakout sophomore season. Michigan does not issue that jersey to a wideout unless he has the potential to uphold the high standard set by previous Wolverine receivers who wore numero uno such as Anthony Carter, Greg McMurtry, Derrick Alexander, and David Terrell. So far, Edwards has lived up to his end.
Edwards has recorded over 1,000 receiving yards and ten touchdowns in each of the last two seasons, and he ended last year with a streak of four straight 100-yard games. He is a fluid athlete with the speed to stretch the defense and the leaping ability to win jump ball battles against most defensive backs. Edwards runs precise routes and is a willing blocker.
While Edwards makes some sensational grabs, he also drops more passes than an elite receiver should. He needs to be more consistent and cease the lapses in concentration. Edwards has been accused in the past of being too brash, arrogant, and selfish, but has made an effort to be more mature and team-oriented. Lloyd Carr held him out of the starting lineup of Michigan’s 2003 season opener for being late to team meetings, but Edwards appears to have straightened up since then.
Edwards has the talent to be a high pick but needs to be more conscientious on and off the field if he is to fully realize his potential.
